Congratulations . . . a good start.
I was recently in Hoopersville and Janet Ruark hospitably lent us her van.
I was in Hoopers Island this past weekend and really loved it. There was a lot of rain and wind and we had hoped to sleep in the cockpit of my boat but couldn't. We actually slept in the church and it was so comfortable!
This is a beautiful island. It's too bad that there are all those abandoned old houses.
Thanks for sharing your experiences on Hoopers Island. I will pass on your kind comments to the pastor and other folk on the island. By the way how did you discover this site you are the first two to post comments about the island.
Robert
As part of Captain Bruner's crew, and one that took shelter in your church, I can't express the gratitude.
Everyone we met on the island was nicer than I could comprehend.
We took cover in your marina during a wet northeast wind, and unloaded some of our seasick crew.
The Captain and I even got some sleep in the church. Again, those we met redefined hospitality.
I second Jason's sentiments. What a beautiful church. And one of the locals seemed so glad that the building was able to shelter us for a night.
We found this "Hooper's Island Blog" from a google.com search. My, the power of the internet ...
Mr. Haynes, what's your story? Are you a native Hooper's Islander?
- Captain Bruner
My mother was born and raised on Hoopers Island. She was born in April 1904. Her mother was Ida T. Booze(my grandmother) and her father was Captain Robert Booze(my grandfather). I am trying to trace my family on my mothers side. So far I have traced it back to my greatgreatgrandfather(Samuel Hooper-born in 1806) and my greatgreatgrandmother(Sara Elizabeth Ruark(1824-1900)./
I wonder if any of my relatives still live on Hoopers Island. If any relatives see this I would appreciate them e-mailing me. My e-mail address is ceclark5642@sbcglobal.net.
Hi, my name is John Elzey, i was born and raised on lower Hoopers Island , moved to Delaware in 2001 and to Indiana in 2003 , my question is do you know of any more hooper island sites on the web , i found this one purely by luck,i like to read about it from time to time,my grandfather was Floyd Ashton which built and owned ruark & ashton seafood , i work as a waterman for about 25 years on the island , and my mom just recently sold the family home there.
Mr. Elzey have you seen www.HoopersIsland.Net? That website has interviews with Calvert Cannon and Herman Twigg, which were collected as part of NPRs national Story Coprs project.
I am looking for information on the Abbott family. My grandfather, Joseph Abbott, son of John Alfred Abbott & Mary Jane Lewis, was born in 1906 on the island. He had a brother named Ansel Abbott, who married Catherine Elzey & a sister named Blanche Abbott who married Jerry Saumenig & Robert Shelton. Any information on the family or of any existing family members still there would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at bottsbob@hotmail.com Thank You
My Great-Grandfather was Romie Booze, and his wife was Zella Hooper. Her brother
was William T. Hooper, and he married Edith Booze. The Booze Brother and sister married the Hooper brother and sister, and lived next door to each other until they died. The Booze house was torn
down a few years ago by the current owner. My family has many wonderful memories
from that old house.
My grandmother was Mina E. Booze. She had a sister named Madeline. My grandmother married Leland B. Phillips, from Fishing Creek. His father was Arthur H. Phillips, and his mother was Rhoda. After Rhoda died, Arthur kept company with Ruby
Shockley until death. Does anyone remeember any of these old folks?
I have lots of great memories of Hoopers Island, and enjoyed the many visits there.
Everyone I knew there has passed on now. It would be nice to hear from anyone who
knew any of my relatives. I can be contacted at DSP7512@aol.com
My family has been researching our ancestry and we're particularly interested in Hooper's Island. Where do you recommend we start researching land & deed history for Hooper's Island and the surrounding districts? I've found several churches from Dorchester Co have indexed their records of Marriages/Deaths/Baptisms online. These have helped, but what we'd love to find, are the links for how our family ended up where we are now, in Delaware.
We've traced a few of our family back to Vienna, MD, and have a copy of a portion of map (District 11, Drawbridge - looks like an old Post Master's map) that lists lands owned by people listed on our family tree. It's interesting since the map we have STOPS at the eastern side of Fishing Bay, at Transquaking, above Blackwater Point. There are listings for Hurleys, Covingtons, & Marshalls on this map.
I noticed that Hooper's Island is on the WEST side of Fishing Bay, and you seem to have a lot of Traverses there. It could be the link we're looking for. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
